More About Eriskay

Eriskay is an island and community council area of the Outer Hebrides in northern Scotland. It lies between South Uist and Barra and is connected to South Uist by a causeway which was opened in 2001.

In the same year Eriskay became the ferry terminal for travelling between South Uist and Barra. The Caledonian MacBrayne vehicular ferry travels between Ceann a' Ghàraidh in Eriskay and Ardmore in Barra. The crossing takes around 40 minutes.

Tourism on Eriksay has been slow to develop. As of 2010 there are no hotels, two or three bed and breakfast establishments, and until recently few self-catering cottages or houses. Since the completion in 2001 of the causeway to South Uist and the inauguration of the vehicle ferry to Barra, a number of properties have been professionally renovated or purpose-built as holiday accommodation. The machair and beaches from Coilleag a' Phrionnsa to Rudha Bàn are increasingly popular with visitors travelling with their motor-homes.

Eriksay Ferries

Eriskay is about three miles long and 1.5 miles wide, and the island is quite hilly, rising to 610 feet, although there is plenty of fertile land. The population of Eriskay is roughly 200 who are in the main Catholic. The island is reached by a vehicle ferry from Ludag on South Uist and passenger ferry from Ludag on South Uist and Eoligarry on Barra.

It was on Eriskay that Bonnie Prince Charlie first landed on 23 July 1745, during the Jacobite Rising of 1745-6, but he was disappointed with the lack of support, and quickly left for the mainland.

In 1941 an 8000-ton cargo ship, the S. S. Politician ran aground carrying some 20,000 cases of whisky bound for America. The enterprising locals salvaged some of the cargo, which caused consternation amongst the authorities and a few of the islanders were imprisoned and fined, although it's hard to see what they had actually done wrong. Whiskey Galore!, written by Compton Mackenzie and dramatising the events, was made into an Ealing Comedy in 1948 using eyewitness accounts, historical papers and official documents, this book tells the story of the SS Politician and the circus that surrounded her, from islanders in small skiffs to wartime excise officers and the final solution to the problem of the vessel affectionately known as the "Polly".

Many Eriskay families have had to leave the island in recent years in search of work and some historic island families have few or no descendants left on the island. An example of these families is the Macinnnes' who were a prominent island family at the time of the Kissling film but are now down to just four members of the extended family dwelling on the island. Many of the people who have left have been young as there is no work for them on the island and no further education available either.
