More About Helsingborg

Located by the sea the town strecthes out along the coast and has historically been the gateway to Denmark and the rest of Europe since it is only 4 km of water between Helsingborg and its Danish sister city Helsingør. Today with strong competition from the bridge in Malmö three different boat companies together have a departure every ten minutes or so to Denmark.

Helsingborg is known as the Pearl of the Sound, a town striving to be continental and something else than the rest of Sweden.

Partially thanks to the town’s great benefactor, Henry Dunker, there are plenty of opportunities to take part in cultural activities. A theater, an internationally acclaimed Symphonhy Orchestera and a brand new cultural centre.

Helsingborg is known for the Kärnan Tower, the remainder of a medieval fortress. It is also known for the Sofiero Castle, with its rhododendron gardens, and the Fredriksdal outdoor museum. During the summer there are daily boat connections from the Råå part of Helsingborg to the little and culturally rich island of Ven.

Helsingborg Ferry Port

Long gone are the days when the locals of HELSINGBORG joked that the most rewarding sight here was Helsingr, the Danish town whose castle (best known as the "Elsinore" of Shakespeare's Hamlet) is clearly visible just 4km away over the Öresund.

With its beautifully developed harbour area, an explosion of brilliantly styled bars, cafés and restaurants both at the water's edge and among the warren of cobbled old-town streets, and an excellent museum, Helsingborg is one of the best urban bases Sweden has to offer: bright, pleasing and basking in a tremendous sense of buoyancy.

Helsingborg is situated on the east side of the Oresund on Sweden's south-west coast. It's Sweden's 8th largest municipality with a population of about 128,000 (2009). Major businesses are service, trade, industry and tourism.

In 2000 a branch of the University of Lund opened in the former Tretorn rubber factories a stone's throw from the Denmark ferries. On the opposite side of the sound in Denmark is Elsinore (Helsingør).

Before the Malmö-Copenhagen Øresund bridge was finished, most of the trans-scandinavian traffic (transit and tourist) used the ferries between Helsingborg and Elsinore. There is still heavy traffic across the Sound here because of the high population density on either side of the border. In addition, the ferries are usually somewhat cheaper than the fees for the bridge and they often provide a shorter route compared to the bridge.
