More About Ile Rousse
Île Rousse is in Balagne, in northern Corsica and owes its name (Red Island) to the presence of a small islet of red granite in its waters. A major tourist destination in the Corsa region, it is one of the most beautiful and romantic natural scenery on the island and never fails to captivate visitors with its breathtaking particularity.
A town with an exceptionally mild climate, Île Rousse allows visitors to immerse themselves in the landscape by taking walks in the verdant woods or by hiking through the enchanting scenery that surrounds them
Recognized as a chic holiday hot spot, Îl Rousse is also celebrated for its beautiful and uncontaminated beaches, its colourful Market of 21 Columns, its aromatic coffee factory and its lively and vibrant seaside shops and restaurants.
Originally an Italian domain, the village today still maintains that defiant and freethinking atmosphere. Resembling more of a Tuscan city, Îl Rousse is a beautiful blend of tradition and modernity, French chic and Italian charm.

L’Ile Rousse is a town of palm trees and smart shops. L’Ile Rousse attracts many holiday-makers, lured here by brochure shots of the nearby beaches. Ile Rousse is enchanting and the ideal starting point for north west Corsica with splendid mountains, beautiful river valleys and wonderful beaches and bays for bathing. There’s lots to discover and the comfortably furnished apartments with their fantastic sea views are a great place for a holiday. With the warmest climate in Corsica, thanks to the sheltering Balagne hills that surround the town, and a gently shelving beach, Ile Rousse is an ideal spot for a family holiday. English tourists were amongst the first to discover the town in the early part of the 20th Century, when seaplanes and boats brought them to Ile Rousse to winter.
Ile Rousse is enchanting and the ideal starting point for north west Corsica with splendid mountains, beautiful river valleys and wonderful beaches and bays for bathing. There’s lots to discover and the comfortably furnished apartments with their fantastic sea views are a great place for a holiday. Ile Rousse is in the Balagne area of Corsica which is famed for its beautiful white sandy beaches and stunning backdrop of verdant Maquis. The gently sloping Corsica beaches create the ideal environment for relaxing family holidays. Ile Rousse is an attractive town with many restaurants and boutiques around the port. The villa itself is in a quiet, terraced, residential area, overlooking Bodhri beach and the rocky coast line.
The Terra Nova or citadel quarter has a distinctly prosperous air and is largely the preserve of Bastia’s affluent set. An intriguing and quaint labyrinth of narrow lanes weaves amongst the buildings between these two districts. And in 1978, the association founded E Voce di U Commune (the voices of the community) to preserve the cultural patrimony of Corsica, especially its rich music tradition. Pigna’s success inspired neighboring villages, and for about the last 12 years, young artisans have been encouraged to live and work in Strada villages in exchange for government grants.
Bastia is the nearest large town and ferry port. Saleccia is perhaps the Corsica’s best beach, large, little visited, with perfect soft sand, clear azure water and a natural backdrop. These, along with the region’s two honeypot towns, L’ele Rousse and Calvi, get swamped in summer, but the scenery more than compensates. In any case, Calvi, with its cream-coloured citadelle, breathtaking white-sand bay and mountainous backdrop, should not be missed. To reach the Ile de la Pietra, the islet that gives the town its name, continue north, passing the station on your left. Once over the causeway connecting the islet to the mainland, you can walk through the crumbling mass of red granite as far as the lighthouse at the far end, from where the view of the town is spectacular, especially at sundown, when you get the full effect of the red glow of the rocks.
