More About Lismore

Lismore is an island situated in Loch Linnhe on the west coast of Scotland. It is serviced by a car ferry from Oban and a passenger ferry from Port Appin.

Just 7 miles by car ferry from Oban and a mere 5 minute crossing by passenger ferry from Port Appin, it is one of the most accessible of Argyll islands.

Lismore, long, narrow, low-lying and fertile, sits neatly in Loch Linnhe in the south-western end of the Great Glen.

The island is tranquil and unspoiled, and surrounded on all sides by stunning mountain scenery, from Ben Nevis in the north (snow-covered in winter) and the Glencoe hills, round, in a clockwise direction, to Ben Cruachan, the hills of Mull to the south and Morvern to the west.

Lismore island is steeped in history, particularly religious history, having been the seat of the Bishops of Argyll, with a Cathedral church, dating from the 13th century, partly surviving in the present Church of Saint Moluag.

As well as the church, there is a primary school, a shop/post office, a Public Hall and our most recent proud addition, an award-winning Gaelic Heritage Museum and café. The museum, plus reconstructed croft house, must be seen to gain a better understanding of the island’s history.

Lismore has many stories to tell all the way from prehistoric times through to the Clearances and World War II.

The Lismore Historical Society opened its new Gaelic Heritage Museum (Ionad Naomh Moluag) in March 2007. This purpose-built building houses an exhibition (Tel: 0163 760030) and a cafe with balcony (Tel: 01631 760 020).

This is adjacent to Tigh Iseabal Dhaidh which is a traditional late 19th century cottage. Admission fee. Open to visitors during the summer months (closed Sundays). Tel: 01631 760257.

There are numerous ancient historical remains on the island including many Bronze Age cairns and Iron Age duns. Tirfuir Broch - which can be seen from Balnagown Croft - is one of the best preserved galleried Pictish brochs in the country. Evidence of earlier occupation was uncovered at Balnagown when a Neolithic stone axe-head was found dating from 3500 B.C.

Lismore Parish Church (also known as the Cathedral of the Isles) is built from parts of the island's original cathedral which was burnt down during the Reformation. The churchyard has some fine Medieval tombstones and is reputed to be the burial place of Saint Moluag who reached Lismore from Ireland in 561 A.D. and set up what became an important monastic centre.

Despite its accessibility you will feel when you step off the ferry that you’ve arrived in a different world. There is an immediate sense of peace, of having “got away”. Once the ferry traffic has departed, there is little sound but the calling of birds. The air is pure and intoxicating!
